About Us

We’re on a mission to cultivate new entrepreneurs and revitalize cities.

America needs more entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurship stimulates job growth, creates new opportunities in cities that need them, and makes people better versions of themselves.

But, there is no clear path to entrepreneurship.

We’re changing that.

Our Mission

To revitalize American cities and communities through entrepreneurship.

To enable our best and brightest to create new opportunities for themselves and others.

To restore the culture of achievement to include value-creation, risk and reward, and the common good.

How We Do It

Train People to Become Entrepreneurs

The best way to become an entrepreneur is to learn from one. We connect recent college grads with jobs in startups and early-stage companies. When our Fellows see someone building a business first-hand, it lets them see that they can, too.

Connect Them to Jobs in Cities That Need Talent

Rather than funnel more college grads to just a handful of places, we connect our Fellows with opportunities in cities with emerging entrepreneurial eco-systems. The companies where they work contribute to job growth and economic progress in those cities and the Fellows themselves become part of a new community.

Support Them in Starting Their Own Companies

Through our network of investors and experts, we support and encourage our Fellows to start their own companies. When they are ready, we are here to help them launch their businesses.

“I started Venture for America in 2011 with a pretty straightforward idea - to channel talented college grads to early-stage companies in Detroit, New Orleans, Providence and other U.S. cities to train as entrepreneurs. This would help the companies succeed and create jobs in these communities. It would also prepare our young people to go on to become the builders and entrepreneurs our country needs.”

Meet Franklin

Meet Franklin

Franklin started building at a young age. From piecing together a neighborhood cleanup crew in elementary school to rallying an orchestral quartet to play at weddings and events during middle school, he was always finding opportunities to start “businesses” and creating teams to make it happen. In undergrad at Morehouse College, he tried out corporate internships on Wall Street, but every time he thought about his post-college path, he knew he wanted a career where he could feel like he was making more of an impact. He wanted to solve problems. He wanted to create value. So, he joined VFA instead.

During his fellowship, Franklin worked at Fontinalis Partners in Detroit. There, he helped the venture capital firm make strategic investments in next-generation mobility. Working with people that truly believe in the future of Detroit inspired Franklin; he loved his new city and did his part to build it through volunteer work and entrepreneurial endeavors of his own. His most recent project, “Yum Village,” created pop-up culinary events to allow local chefs to showcase their talents.

Generation Startup

GENERATION STARTUP, an independent documentary, takes viewers to the front lines of entrepreneurship in America, capturing the struggles and triumphs of six Venture for America Fellows who put everything on the line to build startups in Detroit. Shot over 17 months, it’s an honest, in-the-trenches look at what it takes to launch a startup. Directed by Academy Award winner Cynthia Wade and award-winning filmmaker Cheryl Miller Houser, the film celebrates risk-taking, urban revitalization, and diversity, while delivering a vital call-to-action—with entrepreneurship at a record low, the country’s economic future is at stake.
