Venture for America recruits top recent college grads, puts them through rigorous training and connects them with opportunities at startups in the cities where we work.  

We partner with over 150 companies that span industries, product types and customer segments to source the best startup opportunities for our Fellows.  We look for Company Partners with strong leadership, a positive and inclusive culture, and dynamic roles with a clear trajectory for growth.

Venture for America recruits on-campus at over 100 colleges and universities across the country. We receive thousands of applications each year. After a rigorous three-stage selection process, we accept approximately 15% of those applicants as Fellows.

We Train

We require all Fellows to complete our intensive five-week Training Camp, held each summer. Our Fellows learn both hard and soft skills, from user experience design and financial modeling to public speaking, effective communication within teams, and giving and receiving feedback. We ensure that our Fellows join their companies ready to hit the ground running and add value from day one.

Fellows apply for open roles via our private online portal. They interview directly with their desired companies, both over the phone and in person, to ensure the right fit. They begin working in August of each year, immediately following Training Camp, as full-time salaried employees of their companies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of roles are Fellows typically hired for?

Most Fellows fill roles on the business side – from sales and marketing to finance and operations depending on their experience and skill set. Historically, about 15% of each class will occupy or grow into technical roles. Often they join in hybrid roles and their responsibilities shift over time depending on the needs of the company or interests of the Fellow. Above all else, Fellows are looking for exposure to leadership, a great manager, and room to learn and grow within the company.

How do I know Fellows are top-notch?

We’ve developed a process that selects for individuals with an exceptional track record of “adaptive excellence,” high integrity, resilience, and potential to significantly contribute to a startup. We have historically accepted between 10%-18% of applicants. Candidates submit a written application and conduct a Skype interview before being invited to Selection Day. This final round is an eight-hour long group and individual interview where we test for critical thinking skills, social and emotional intelligence, leadership potential, and business acumen. We also survey company partners throughout the two years to track performance—to date, 86% of our Fellows are rated in the top 1% or 10% of all entry-level employees.

Should I attend a job fair?

With over 200+ companies hiring in 2016, it’s more important than ever to meet Fellows in person and differentiate yourselves. Above all else, our Fellows are looking for the right culture fit – Job Fairs are the most effective way to convey the personality of your organization and find the right fit for your team. Our four job fairs in 2017 will be held in Birmingham on April 21st, Miami on April 28th, Cleveland on May 5th, and Baltimore on May 12th. What if I need someone before August?

Some of our Fellows do transition mid-fellowship, thus we may have alums or current Fellows seeking re-placement. Feel free to let us know if you have current openings by sending us a note at companies@ventureforamerica.org or to your contact on our team. We will then share your post on our internal VFA job board.
