Director of Development

Venture for America is looking for a Director of Development to become the driving force behind all VFA fundraising activities and initiatives. We’re looking for an energetic, reliable team player who can take on a non-traditional development role and oversee all of Venture for America’s fundraising efforts to ensure that the organization meets its annual and long-term goals. This role will be key in executing an ambitious growth plan achieving a budget of over $10m within the next few years, up from a current budget of $3.3m.

Venture for America is looking for someone to build out our individual fundraising structure and process and to manage a growing Development Team. This is an exciting role for someone ready to build and develop strategy and processes to ensure Venture for America’s long-term fundraising success.

You:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree
  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; can speak compellingly about our organization, mission, and goals and has a mature presence

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead the VFA Development Team, which represents professionals working on institutional fundraising, events and individual giving
  • Work closely with CEO on five to six figure donor cultivation and solicitation meetings
  • Work cross-functionally with other teams within the organization to set priorities for organizational advancement
  • Take ownership of major gifts fundraising and build a high-level individual donor portfolio
  • Serve as a representative of the organization to potential and current funders
  • Help develop fundraising infrastructure and processes
  • Grow and manage relationships with individual supporters and develop and cultivate new relationships
  • Coordinate and attend fundraising meetings and events
  • Assist with board development, including board engagement strategies, preparing for board meetings, and corresponding with board members

Development Manager

We’re currently looking for someone to take ownership of our foundation and institutional partnerships. The Development Manager will be responsible for some of the most important funding relationships of the organization and will have the opportunity to grow the portfolio over time. This is a growth opportunity that will provide exposure to a multi-functional development team – including events, major gifts and marketing.

You:

  • Are a natural writer and storyteller with experience crafting proposals or pitches
  • Have a strong presence in meetings and an ability to connect authentically with VFA’s partners

  • Write compelling proposals to secure six and seven figure grants, including multi-year commitments from leading philanthropic investors
  • Speak with passion and purpose, projecting confidence and doing a great job of representing VFA
  • Prepare meticulous reports that convey the impact of the donor’s investment in VFA
  • Maintain a grants calendar and stay on top of multiple deadlines
  • Work with internal teams at VFA to showcase their accomplishments and streamline systems for metrics reporting

    Marketing Associate

    We’re currently seeking a highly motivated early-career professional to join us on our small but growing marketing team. We’re looking for an energetic, savvy, do-it-all comms and marketing guru who’s ready to dive in and help show the world how awesome VFA is.

    You:

    • Are a professional or recent grad with experience in communications, marketing, writing, social media, or related.
    • A perfectionist who has next-level organizational skills and detail-orientation. Typos make you sick.
    • Can prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Feel there is no task too small.
    • Not only have very strong writing skills, but you love doing it. Have the ability to produce compelling content quickly in the VFA brand voice, tell a story, and adapt your writing for different audiences.
    • Have an eye for design, and strong skills in editing, proofreading, layout, and/or web publishing.
    • Comfortable with social media and able to identify opportunities and channels for sharing content and engaging our audiences.
    • Have good instincts. Only have to ask how to do something once (maybe twice).
    • Have strong values alignment with VFA and our Team. Passionate about what VFA is doing and wants to share it with the world.
    • Experience with design platforms, photo, and video editing is a huge plus.

    What you’ll do:

    • Work with different teams to create the high-quality content and materials each needs to accomplish its goals (including reports, press releases, blog posts, presentations, event messaging, e-mail campaigns, announcements and more).
    • Design and update compelling collateral and materials for multiple departments (with a primary focus on Programs and Development).
    • Manage VFA’s blog and social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin, and more) to amplify our message to the right audiences.
    • Coordinate and execute PR/media initiatives.
    • Produce and source content to tell the stories of our Fellows, companies, and cities.
    • Be a gatekeeper and help ensure that everything VFA puts out there is on-brand and well-designed.
    • Help with other comms and marketing initiatives as needed (website updates, e-mail marketing, and more).
    • Create a system to keep VFA’s media organized. Occasionally capture photos or video footage at VFA events.

    Programs Associate

    The Programs team (internally referred to as The Sherpas, as a hat tip to the Himalayan mountaineers who guide adventurers to the top of Everest) oversees VFA Fellow training and education, including our legendary five-week summer Training Camp. Our team also connects Fellows with VFA’s broad network of entrepreneurs, industry experts, and investors.

    We’re currently seeking someone to serve as a first point of contact for Fellows and alumni of the program, helping resolve and manage challenges, keeping in touch with them personally, planning events in their cities, and tracking and reporting to help improve how we train and develop them as young professionals and future entrepreneurs. There’s a lot to get done, and a lot of opportunity to take ownership over projects and innovate on what we’re doing.

    You:

    • Are very intuitive, and possess a high processing speed
    • Are adaptable and flexible in every situation. Able to work across teams with varying goals.
    • Possess a high degree of professionalism, but aren’t afraid to laugh at yourself

    • Coach and help solve Fellow challenges and work with the team to craft solutions to more substantive problems
    • Create and improve on materials that can help Fellows tackle common problems, from professional to personal

    Startup Partnerships Associate

    You:

    Community Marketing Intern

    We are building out a national internship program in communities across the country and are looking for enthusiastic, entrepreneurial undergraduate students to join our team for the 2014-2015 academic year.     Venture for America Fall Internship

    We’re currently seeking highly motivated college students to join our team for the fall of 2014. The Venture for America Fall Internship (#InternsForAmerica) is an opportunity for talented undergrads to get involved at a high growth nonprofit working to train top colleges graduates to become business builders and job creators.

    • Corporate Development: The Corporate Development team at VFA sources great opportunities for our Fellows by identifying expansion cities and finding promising startups who need talent. We work with cool companies in VFA cities and match them with our top-notch Fellows. Day to day, we connect with awesome entrepreneurs, scout up-and-coming cities, and support our Fellows in finding their dream job.
    • Recruitment: The Recruitment team (1/2 of “The Voice”) is responsible for recruiting and selecting Fellows. We field questions about VFA or the application, visit campuses and handle the selection process from reviewing applications to planning Selection Days.
    • Communications: The Communications team (1/2 of “The Voice”) handles all things related to the VFA brand. Communications cultivates content for VFA’s website, newsletters, social media, and presentations to amplify our message to the right audiences.
    • Programs: The Programs team act as Sherpas helping to guide our Fellows from being newly minted top-college grads to value creation machines at their startups and beyond. They work on our mentor program, Fellow support, job support, skill development, City Liaison program, and Fellow Training Camp.
