Summer Media Internship

We’re currently seeking a media intern to join our team and help us document key moments of Training Camp 2015. Training Camp is a rigorous 5-week program, held on campus at Brown University, that will prepare the 2016 class of Venture for America Fellows to hit the ground running as early-stage startup employees and entrepreneurs. We’re looking for an intern with photography and videography skills who loves telling stories through video, has great technical chops in shooting and editing, and ultimately wishes to make Venture for America come alive through static media.

This 10-week internship runs from May 31-August 5, with some flexibility around start and end dates. Before and after Training Camp, you’ll work from VFA headquarters in NYC.

You:

  • Are a current undergraduate at a top college or university, in any major.
  • Welcome challenges and responsibility; you’re an ambitious self-starter with exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Are a team player who feels that no task is too small. You’re ready to fix A/V problems, take out the trash after events, and generally do whatever it takes to keep Training Camp running seamlessly.
  • Have experience developing videos from concept to execution.
  • Have an exciting portfolio, with good examples of camerawork and editing.
  • Boast solid photography experience, shooting headshots, interiors, etc.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud (preferred) or Final Cut Pro.
  • Motion design skills (e.g., After Effects) a plus.
  • Have strong values alignment with VFA and are excited about our mission.

What you’ll do:

  • Work full-time in Providence, RI from June 20-July 22, and from VFA’s headquarters in New York City before and after Training Camp.
  • Be part of the core team managing daily operations at Training Camp, including the schedule and other logistics.
  • Work closely with the marketing team to document Training Camp’s programming and special events through photo and video.
  • Attend VFA Training Camp daily programming and special events with camera in hand and an eye toward capturing the special moments that make Training Camp unique.

The good stuff:

  • The VFAmily: we have a fun, tightly-knit team culture (a must to live together in Providence for five weeks!), and you’ll have an opportunity to make a real impact over the course of the summer.
  • The substantive, marketable experience: we treat our interns like VFA team members. We’ll give you tons of responsibility from day one, and the more you rise to the occasion the more we’ll have you take on. And, you’ll have the opportunity to build a creative portfolio in entrepreneurship content.
  • The inside scoop: you’ll have a front-row seat to a premier entrepreneurship training program, and will have the opportunity to regularly sit in on trainings.
  • The network: our past interns tell us that the best part of this internship is getting to know VFA Fellows, alumni, and supporters.
  • The perks: we offer all interns a stipend, and will cover your room, board, and travel expenses while in Providence (you’ll secure your own housing while in NYC).

Training Camp and Curriculum Lead

We have an incredible opportunity to help shape and drive Venture for America’s summer Training Camp program in Providence, RI. Our Fellows are new college grads in training to become entrepreneurs, so our ideal candidate has an interest in entrepreneurship and an understanding of how to shape great entrepreneurs. This year we’re focusing on scaling to meet the demands of a 50% larger class size, making 2016 our biggest Training Camp yet.

We’re seeking an experienced educator or entrepreneur with a surplus of energy, the ability to engage one person or several hundred, and an ability to adapt their teaching and coaching style as they work. You should be comfortable working independently while managing multiple stakeholders. We’re looking for someone who can continue to make progress on the awesome program we’ve built but also improve each aspect of it.

Outside of building Training Camp curriculum and managing logistics, you’ll focus the rest of the year on building out trainings and curriculum for Fellows to learn how to be amazing startup employees and eventually start their own companies. You’ll need to relocate to Providence, RI for the duration of the program (June 17 – July 22nd), with room and board covered.

There’s a ton of opportunity to better support our Fellows and Founders by engaging the right trainers and community, and we’re looking for a great addition to the Programs team to help us do so.

You:

  • Have a knack for engaging large groups of people in a classroom or similar setting and have experience and success working with groups of all sizes
  • Have an uncanny ability to inspire, challenge, and keep people accountable around you
  • Are thought of as a mentor and resource to colleagues, friends, and/or students
  • Are adept at delivering critical feedback constructively and comfortable with the concept of tough love
  • Are intuitive, possess a high processing speed, and are able to work with little direction and take a proactive approach to most everything
  • Are meticulously organized, comfortable prioritizing demands, and able to manage several competing initiatives at once
  • Embody Venture for America values with everything you do: you’re high integrity, courageous, risk-tolerant, and give everything 10% more than it requires
  • Possess a high degree of professionalism, but aren’t afraid to laugh at yourself
  • Are a top-notch verbal and written communicator, whether it’s with one person or several hundred
  • Have experience planning and running large-scale trainings, have experience building curriculum, and understand how high capacity adults learn
  • Have at least 5 years of professional experience and have worked at a startup or high-growth company

What you’ll do:

  • Begin and end each day of Training Camp with the Fellows by sharing objectives and framing why it matters for them as aspiring entrepreneurs
  • Lead discussions, answer questions, and come up with compelling daily activities to encourage active learning and participation from the entire group
  • Manage a compact, rigorous Training Camp schedule with many moving pieces, working closely with the Programs team to plan schedules in advance but remaining nimble and adaptable
  • Work closely with the Director of Programs on curriculum development and how to effectively engage with trainers, visitors, and speakers
  • Pay close attention to energy levels and attention spans of Fellows and make game time decisions about how to energize the room between trainings or events
  • Build year-round curriculum to support Fellows and Founders in startup life. Engage our network and grow it with top notch educators and facilitators.
  • Create and deliver meaningful presentations on the skills necessary for startup life
  • Provide real-time individual feedback and coach Fellows at Training Camp and throughout the year

The good stuff:

  • High performers at VFA are given substantial opportunity to grow and develop
  • You’ll earn a competitive salary, commensurate with experience, plus health, dental, and vision benefits
  • VFA is a dynamic startup environment with varied responsibilities and a different challenge each day (we mean it – always plenty of interesting problems to work on!)
  • You’ll work alongside motivated, high-caliber team members as well as a large group of high achieving, intelligent Fellows. You’ll be inspired by them daily
  • You’ll suddenly have less trouble getting out of bed and going to work in the morning
