Careers

Interested in joining the Venture for America team? We look for the same qualities in full-time team members as we do in our Fellows; after all, we’re a startup ourselves, and we’re on the hunt for smart, tenacious go-getters to propel the VFA rocketship to ever greater heights.

Does this sound like you?

  • You’re comfortable operating under ambiguity, and you don’t wait around to be told what to do — instead, you’re figuring out how you can add value.
  • You’re smart and a quick study, ready to solve problems big and small.
  • You’re high-character, and people like working with you.
  • You’re a strong communicator and a solid writer. You can crank out compelling, on-message emails to different audiences without missing a beat.
  • Above all else, you’re passionate about Venture for America’s mission. You would have jumped at the opportunity to be a Fellow yourself.

If so, we want you on the VFA team! Here are some of the reasons why we love working at VFA, and why we think you will, too:

  • You’ll earn a competitive salary with health, dental, and vision benefits.
  • We have some nice perks, like regular team lunches and weekly gym mornings.
  • You’ll have a ton of autonomy, and be trusted to self-manage and solve problems creatively.
  • You’ll work alongside a team of crazy motivated, high-caliber people who also have a lot of fun together, from impromptu crockpot cookoffs to quarterly team appreciation days.
  • You’ll suddenly have less trouble getting out of bed and going to work in the morning.

Bottom line: we work hard, we get a lot done, but we recognize that you’re a real person with a life outside of your job. And the best part? We’re hiring now.

Community Marketing Associate

We’re currently seeking a highly motivated early-career professional to join us on our small but growing marketing team. We’re looking for an energetic, savvy, do-it-all marketing guru who’s ready to dive in and help share the stories of VFA with potential Fellows, and drive the organization’s growth.

You:

  • Have worked in a marketing/branding/communications role (whether through rigorous internships or full-time), with experience in content creation, writing, social media, design, and/or other areas. Startup experience is a plus
  • Have a growth-oriented mindset while still valuing high-touch, quality content
  • Are a perfectionist who has next-level organizational skills and detail-orientation. Typos make you sick
  • Not only have very strong writing skills, but you love doing it. You can produce compelling content quickly in the VFA brand voice, tell a story, and adapt your writing for different audiences
  • Have an eye for design. You don’t need to be a professional designer, but you should be savvy when it comes to layout, consistency, and knowing what looks good
  • Are familiar with email and content marketing, and excited to learn more
  • Can prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. You feel there is no task too small, and work well in the absence of structure
  • Possess social media savvy, and are able to identify opportunities and channels for sharing content and engaging our audiences
  • Have good instincts, and only have to ask how to do something once (maybe twice)
  • Have strong values alignment with VFA and our team. You truly believe in what VFA is doing and want to share it with the world
  • Have a B.A./B.S.; 1-3 years of professional experience is preferred
  • Familiarity with design platforms, PowerPoint, photo and/or video editing is a plus

What you’ll do:

  • Identify and implement improvements to our marketing and communications, with a focus on potential applicants to the VFA fellowship
  • Work across the Community Growth and Marketing teams to create high-quality content, messages, and materials targeted primarily at potential VFA applicants
  • Find new methods to grow VFA’s reach while still maintaining personal, targeted communications
  • Manage our blog and all social media accounts
  • Help widen the funnel of high-quality, potential VFA applicants by increasing brand awareness among our target demographic (both on campus and through online channels)
  • Capture and deliver inspiring VFA stories that educate potential VFA applicants and keep them excited about VFA from first touch point through hitting apply
  • Strike a balance by establishing and and reinforcing our value proposition in everything you do without “selling” – we strive to represent the VFA experience genuinely at every turn
  • Track and report on our digital presence and the effectiveness of marketing efforts, including email marketing, website, blog, and social media

The good stuff:

  • High performers at VFA are given substantial opportunity to grow and develop
  • You’ll earn a competitive salary, commensurate with experience, plus health, dental, and vision benefits
  • VFA is a dynamic startup environment with varied responsibilities and a different challenge each day (we mean it – always plenty of interesting problems to work on!)
  • You’ll work alongside a team of crazy motivated, high-caliber people
  • You’ll suddenly have less trouble getting out of bed and going to work in the morning

How to apply:

To apply, please fill out our application, keeping in mind that this is your chance to impress us with your writing skills, storytelling, and ability to market yourself. We aren’t looking for a cover letter – we want to know who you really are and why you’re the best person to join our marketing team. If you seem like a good fit, we will contact you with next steps.

Community Marketing Intern

We are building out a national internship program in communities across the country and are looking for enthusiastic, entrepreneurial undergraduate students to join our team for the 2014-2015 academic year. As a member of our internship program, you will receive benefits exclusive to those in the VFA network. The position is unpaid, but comes with a ton of perks.

The good stuff:

  • Automatic advancement to the phone interview round of our Fellowship application
  • Access to the Fellows and VFA Team
  • Online skills development and educational resources
  • Exposure to our network of startup company partners and the latest updates from VFA HQ
  • Performance bonuses for meeting set marketing and Fellowship application goals
  • Pride in knowing you are driving our nation’s talent to growth companies across the country!

What you’ll do:

  • Develop partnerships and facilitate introductions with relevant student organizations and influential faculty members
  • Create and execute a holistic marketing plan that raises awareness about VFA and drives applications on your campus
  • Promote, participate, and at times lead marketing events at your university and in your community
  • Brainstorm innovative initiatives that VFA could host, sponsor or co-host with a community partner. This could include pitch competitions, hackathons, product challenges, panel discussions, skill sessions, and more.

Who we are looking for:

  • An undergraduate student at one of our 90+ target universities
  • An energetic, enthusiastic person with a strong work ethic and interest in startups
  • A creative thinker who’s able to work independently and take initiative
  • A connector who will proactively partner with student organizations and influential faculty
  • You can construct a marketing plan that ranges from events to e-mail to social media
  • You are organized, reliable, and able to commit at least 5 hours a week, including 2 weekly office hours

How to apply:

Talent Acquisition Analyst

We’re currently seeking someone to join our talent acquisition team, essentially a two-person admissions department, and help manage the entire fellowship application and selection process. The talent acquisition associate will master and improve upon our application and review software and systems, coordinate with team VFA and Fellows to execute VFA’s world-class applicant evaluation process, and help select future cohorts of builders, starting with the class of 2016. This is a dream role for an analytically-minded recent grad who’s interested in learning more about talent acquisition and would jump at the chance to join a dynamic startup nonprofit where growth, change, and goofiness are the only constants.

You:

  • Are ridiculously process-oriented and don’t miss details. Logistics are your strong suit
  • Are analytical and inquisitive. Given a big spreadsheet of data, your first instinct is to dive in and start pulling out trends
  • Either already boast serious data chops or are a quick study who can teach yourself Excel functions on the fly
  • Demonstrate next-level communication in person, on the phone, and via email
  • Can juggle—that is, prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Demonstrate excellent judgment and a wise-beyond-your-years maturity; handle sensitive situations gracefully
  • Thrive under pressure and fit in well in a fast-paced, deadline-driven startup environment
  • Love VFA. Our mission, culture, team: you can’t get enough
  • Have a B.A./B.S. and 0-2 years of professional experience

What you’ll do:

  • Coordinate the nuts and bolts of the three-part VFA fellowship selection process using our application and review tracking platforms
  • Become an expert in evaluating candidates yourself and in leveraging/coordinating the efforts of team and Fellow reviewers and interviewers
  • Manage the logistics of guiding hundreds of candidates through our interview process, from planning Selection Days (our group interview day) to getting to know our applicant tracking system inside and out
  • Create and execute processes to increase efficiency, improve existing practices, and scale our application review infrastructure
  • Analyze data to draw conclusions about the applicant pool and make recommendations to improve our recruitment, candidate evaluation, and Fellow training procedures
  • Communicate with applicants via email to answer questions and document all interactions
  • Contribute/pitch in to all aspects of VFA, from Fellow recruitment, to summer Training Camp, to Fellow programming, to fundraising
