Fellow Spotlight: Derek Turner, Ambassador

Name: Derek Turner
Hometown: Phoenix, AZ
University: Columbia University ‘12

Community Ambassador, Ambassador
Detroit, MI

What initially attracted you to Venture for America?
I had been fascinated by Detroit for a year but I had no idea how I could get involved. I started considering doing a startup in Detroit, but didn’t have any good business ideas. As I was looking around at incubators in Detroit, I found out about VFA and it was obvious from the beginning that it was the perfect program for me. They connected all the dots – trained me (an anthropology and political science major) to be literate in business, connected me to a community of peers in my city, helped me find housing, found me a really rewarding job, introduced me to a mentor, and allowed me to be a part of something very new and exciting!
What is the best part of being a VFA fellow?
The best part of being a VFA fellow is being exposed to people (fellows, board members, mentors, etc) who believe that cities that other people have written off as failures can be brought back to prosperity. It’s so encouraging seeing all of these people working so hard for that idea and it allows me to have hope for the future of this country.
What does Ambassador do?
Ambassador is referral reward software that gives companies the ability to track and manage customer referrals. Since most companies who want to grow using referrals don’t have the technological expertise to track their customer’s behaviors online in order to reward them for referring friends, they can just subscribe to our service and we’ll do it for them.
What do you do on a typical day at work?
Right now I’m doing a lot of marketing and market research, so a typical day might have me writing an e-book or whitepaper, looking at our website analytics, reviewing customer behavior and needs, and brainstorming how we can reach new potential customers – of course with a ping pong game thrown in there. I love that I never do the same thing from day to day and I can help decide what’s important for the company to be doing at any given point.
What’s your favorite thing about Detroit?:
The surprises. Whether it’s the really hip bar in an abandoned neighborhood, the ribs and karaoke place at the Saturday market, or the pool on the roof of our apartment building, Detroit will always defy expectations in a great way.
What do you hope to accomplish in your time with VFA?
I want to be at least partially responsible for significant growth at Ambassador and economic prosperity in Detroit.

Looking Back: VFA Summer Celebration

It’s hard to believe that it’s been two months since over 400 Venture for America supporters gathered and celebrated a successful first year at the 2012 VFA Summer Celebration in NYC. Since then, The first class of Venture for America fellows completed their 5-week training at Brown University and have now landed in Cincinnati, Detroit, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Providence to begin their exciting new lives and careers.

At the event, Columbia grad and VFA Fellow Derek Turner represented his class and spoke about why he was so excited to join Venture for America and contribute to the revitalization of Detroit. Though Derek is now on the ground working hard for his company, Ambassador, we wanted to take look back at his inspiring speech.

We wish Derek and all the other fellows the best of luck in their first weeks with their new companies!

NextGen Journal Features VFA Fellows

NextGen Journal, a “website for the next generation,” is run by a team of college students from around the nation. Every week, the website will feature a fellow from the Venture for America Class of 2012 in its “Future Entrepreneurs” series. If you haven’t already, check out the articles below!

In week one, NextGen Journal featured Chelsea Koglmeier, a VFA fellow who recently graduated from Duke with a degree in Public Policy. Read the article to find out what Chelsea thought of the first ever VFA Training Camp and see why she’s so excited to join The Brandery in Cincinnati.

Next, the series featured Brian Rudolph of Emory University, who seemed destined to become an entrepreneur since the days of selling candy from his middle school locker. In the feature, Brian discusses founding his own music website in college and why he’s looking forward to working for Detroit startup Quikkly.

Then last week, MIT grad Kathy Cheng explained that after a service trip to Calcutta, India, she realized enterprise in the U.S. is just as important as it is abroad. According to Kathy, her job at Doodle Home in Detroit is the perfect way to combine her creative side and business analytical side.

Venture for America August Newsletter

Dear VFA Friends and Supporters:

We hope you are all enjoying your summer as much as we are here at Venture for America!

Our Fellows just finished Training Camp at Brown University and are now heading to companies in Detroit, New Orleans, Cincinnati, Las Vegas, and Providence for two years to work at regional start-ups and growth companies.  The Fellows' time at Brown was packed with everything from trainings and challenges to mixers and meet-and-greets with seasoned entrepreneurs and business leaders. To see, check out the 400+ photos we posted from our five weeks in Rhode Island. ??     ??

You can also visit the VFA Fellows Tumblr here.  All of the Fellows felt that they’d developed valuable skills and long-lasting relationships through the Training Camp, and we’re excited to see them in action as they move to their cities and begin working to rebuild the country through entrepreneurship.?

Summer Celebration Update

Thanks again to those of you who attended the 2012 VFA Summer Celebration in June at the IAC HQ in New York. The evening was an incredible success with 400+ attendees and over $365,000 committed or raised. We've gotten even more photos from the evening and our VFA Photobooth, so check them out!

Class of 2013 Applications Now Open

As hard as it is to believe, we are now setting our sights on the Class of 2013.  We are pleased to announce that applications are now open to join Venture for America for the 2013 Fellowship. If you or someone you know would like to apply, please visit our Admissions Info and FAQs page for more information, or click here to apply.?? The 2013 application deadlines are:

  • October 1st, 2012
  • December 3rd, 2012
  • February 18th, 2013

All things being equal, it’s better to apply in the early rounds, so let your friends/cousins/nephews/nieces know soon.

VFA is Expanding in 2013

While our fellows head off to Cincinnati, Detroit, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Providence to begin work at their companies, VFA is already looking at potential expansion cities for 2013. In Ezra Klein's recent Washington Post Article about Venture for America, Andrew mentioned some of these cities, including Baltimore, Cleveland, New Haven, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Raleigh-Durham.??

Local organizations in many of these cities have already expressed interest in bringing Venture for America to their regions. Articles were recently published in the Pittsburgh Business Times, Pop City Pittsburgh, and the Baltimore Business Journal describing VFA's possible expansion.  We’re excited to explore these cities’ growth company opportunities in the coming months.

Happy Birthday to Venture for America

On July 18th, Venture for America celebrated its first birthday in Newport, RI with the first class of VFA Fellows. Thank you to everyone who has offered their support over the past year. We couldn't have done it without you!

Even after an incredibly successful first year, VFA still needs your help as we look toward upcoming expansion, recruitment, and continued support of the fellows in their cities. We appreciate any contribution, no matter how small.

Click here to make a donation now.

We know that there are no quick fixes or magic bullets as to how you rebuild an economy.  But we believe that if we send dozens of our best and brightest graduates this year and every year hereafter to start-ups in cities around the country, we can have a profound impact.  Over time our Fellows will become contributors to, and even founders and leaders of, promising growth companies across the country that will generate a virtuous cycle of revitalization in Detroit, New Orleans, and other cities.  They will represent a new set of role models for our young people to emulate as we restore the culture of achievement to include value creation, risk and reward, and the common good.

If you haven't already, please like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and LinkedIn to help spread the word. Thank you for your continued support of Venture for America!

Sincerely,

The VFA Team
